Pangi fabric or cotton fur-weave madras diamond fabric originated in the slave era as a garment for both male and female Maroons.

Initially, this cotton cloth was intended to cover the body. In addition, the pangi emphasized the individuality of the Maroon, while on the other hand it indicated membership in one of the six Maroon tribes in Suriname.

The name "pangi" is probably a corruption of "paantje" or "pagne", the name of the wraparound skirt of 18th century slave women. The word paantje may also be derived from the Portuguese "pano" and translated into Dutch to "pa(a)ntje". (. http://www.surinaamsmuseum.net/ned.htm)

The pangi is used as a garment for celebrations, special occasions or death but also as a means of communication (to pass messages).

Today, pangi fabric (cotton fur weave madras diamond fabric) is used to make a wide variety of products made, including various garments, coasters, placemats and bags.
